
The Bradford College Engineering Department is celebrating success, after three College students beat off stiff competition to win the WorldSkills UK Engineering Challenge - WorldSkills is the biggest skills competition in the world!
WorldSkills UK is a competition designed by leading industry experts and is open to young people and adults in education or employment. UK Skills, a not-for-profit organisation that champions vocational skills and learning for work through competitions and awards, oversees WorldSkills UK competitions.
Bradford College entered students: Andrew Wilkinson, Simon Ward (HNC Mechanical Engineering) and Andrew Hyde (Advanced Diploma Engineering Awards Limited (EAL) to the prestigious competition. The team entered under the name ‘Trinity CMB’ and competed against three highly skilled teams from British Aerospace to design a specialist component. Achieving a phenomenal score of 93 out of 100!
‘Trinity CMB’ were delighted to win the prestigious competition and were presented with a gold medal at the UK live final, held during a high profile national awards evening.
The students first enrolled at the College on an EAL NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations course and are all employed by local company CarnaudMetalBox in Shipley.
Commenting on the team’s success, Geraldine McCallum, Curriculum Team Leader for Engineering said: “This is a fantastic achievement. We’re very proud of the students! WorldSkills UK is a prestigious competition and the team faced a huge challenge. They were up against very stiff competition and their skills shone through. The lads really deserve their success. We look forward to celebrating with them!”
Ian Scholey from CarnaudMetalBox added: “As an employer we are incredibly proud of these three young Engineers. They have worked very hard to achieve this goal and we’re certain they’ll go on to significantly greater success. Congratulations.”
