"I really wanted to give something back; that’s why I thought I’d donate one of my paintings.”

A2 Art Student, Samie Ahmed is set to become the next in new generation talent to emerge from the Bradford College Sixth Form Centre, with his imaginative and lively artwork.

Originally Samie enrolled on an A level Law course, but quickly realised that Art was his true passion. Encouraged by staff and students at Bradford College to follow his heart, he embarked on a change in career direction, enrolling on the A level Art course - Samie has never looked back!

In a wonderful gesture to express his gratitude to staff for their help, support and encouragement over the last two years, Samie decided to donate a painting from his contemporary collection to his progress coach, Tina Yau during a formal presentation ceremony. Samie's defines his art as ‘conceptual ideas that evolve from a contemporary social and political context’.

Nick Byrne, Assistant Director of Learner Services was invited to join in the celebrations, along with Curriculum Team Leader, Veronique Leygue.  As part of the College’s commitment to student support, Nick was instrumental in helping Samie progress with his studies.  He provided financial assistance, allowing Samie to purchase vital art equipment.

Veronique and Nick were delighted to attend the ceremony to see Samie present Tina with the original piece of artwork.  Speaking at the memorable event, Nick said: “I think it’s great recognition for the work of the progress coaches, as it’s a fairly new role within the College.  It’s something we’ve developed in the last few years to help students progress and achieve.”

Nick continued: “Samie is a student who has benefited from the help of the progress coaches.  We were able to offer him financial assistance with his art course materials.  I think its made a big impact, in terms of allowing Samie to complete the course and continue with his studies.  It’s about making sure that things happen at the right time and support is in place. The progress coaches do an excellent job!  They’re dedicated, hard working and have a great attitude. They’re also really nice people, so it’s good that they’ve gained a bit of appreciation - and the fact that it comes from a student like Samie, is probably the most important thing, because it’s real recognition!”

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Veronique said: “I think this is a positive act of appreciation from Samie to say ‘thank you’, to members of staff and in particular to Tina his progress coach.”

Veronique added: “Samie has made very good progress in the Sixth Form Centre and is a lovely student.  Everyone in the Sixth Form Centre likes working with him.  He’s very respectful, dedicated and passionate about Art.  He aims to carry this on to degree level.  Nick and Tina have been able to help him make his dreams possible. I wish him all the best for the future –and I’m confident he will have a fantastic future.”

Samie presented Tina with the painting, which she was thrilled to accept, Tina said:  “I’m really delighted.  It’s a really special thing to happen and I think his work is fantastic!” Tina plans to hang the artwork in her office so the whole team can benefit. Tina added:  “It will really brighten up the office.”

Samie remarked:  “Tina has helped me so much over the past two years.  Two years ago I wanted to do something in Art and Design, but thought I’d never find a way.  With Tina’s support, she gave me the motivation to go for what I wanted.”

Samie added: “I started College four weeks late and Tina helped me adjust. She also helped me financially to buy my art equipment.  I really wanted to give something back; that’s why I thought I’d donate one of my paintings to her.”  Samie intends to continue his studies here at the College. In September he will fulfil his dreams and study Art.  Samie concluded:  “Everyone’s so friendly; I’ve made some really good friends and next years looks set to be an amazing year!”
