“We look forward to seeing how the funds raised will be used, and hope to continue to work with the Kashmir Education Foundation to support their efforts.”
Michele Sutton, Bradford College Principal

Staff and students from Bradford College have been marking the third anniversary of a devastating earthquake which killed 75,000 people in South Asia in 2005, by raising £13,350 for the Kashmir Education Foundation.

This is part of a series of fundraising activities, devised to raise money since news of the earthquake broke on the 8th October 2005.  The magnitude of the (7.6) earthquake occurred in Pakistan, Afghanistan and India, leaving thousands dead and hundreds of thousands homeless.

Showing commitment and dedication, the College quickly set up a ‘South Asian Earthquake Committee’ to deliver a project aimed at rebuilding communities, to help individuals through the power of education. As the shocking tremor hit, 18,000 children died in schools alone, yet more were killed at home.  As well as the loss of human life, the earthquake destroyed homes, public buildings, infrastructure, commerce and communications.

The College has been raising funds since late 2005, following the earthquake in Pakistan. Staff and students have been involved in fundraising initiatives, including fashion shows, music/dance events and charity auctions.

Paying tribute to everyone involved in the continued support of the initiative, Michele Sutton, Bradford College Principal, and the Kashmir Education Foundation thanked the community, local businesses and College students/staff for all their hard work raising funds.

Presenting the cheque for £13,350 to Zulfi Karim, (a representative from the Kashmir Education Foundation), Michele said: “We look forward to seeing how the funds raised will be used, and hope to continue to work with the Kashmir Education Foundation to support their efforts. We're interested in finding out more about other long term education projects and are currently exploring other initiatives including student volunteer programmes.”
