Bradford College is leading the eco-travel revolution with the launch of the Green Travel Awareness Day, in a bid to encourage staff, students and the general public to improve their carbon footprint and become more eco friendly.
Researchers believe that UK workers spend an average of 92 minutes per day commuting to and from work. This adds up to a huge amount of time spent commuting over the year - and also represents a huge potential impact on the environment. With growing concern for the planet – there has never been a better time for companies to improve their carbon footprint and become more eco friendly. Bradford College takes its commitment to environmental issues very seriously, with green travel being an integral part of the Healthy College initiative.
During the day Healthy College Manager, Jane Marshall joined College Champions to chat to students and staff about green initiatives and answer questions. Speaking at the event, Jane Marshall said: “This is a great initiative, which has helped to raise awareness of green travel options. Staff and students have learnt more about turning commuting into eco-commuting.”
During the eco friendly event, staff and students discovered more about: Greener Driving, Lift Sharing, Public Transport, Walking, City Car Club, Community Safety, Students’ Union and Cycling Activities. Research suggests that 75 percent of all UK journeys are short enough to be sensibly made by bike. The cycling activities during the day included ‘Dr Bike’, maintenance advice for bicycles. Free breakfast was also provided for staff and students who ride to College.
Working in partnership with Natural England, the College has recently trained 10 members of staff as Walking Leaders, to take groups out for lunchtime walks in the immediate area and longer walks a bit further afield. Members of the College’s newly-formed Walking Group gave out freebies and information on local walks during the special event.
With wide spread media coverage on weather catastrophes, tsunamis and climate change, we can all make a positive contribution to help reduce the negative impact on our planet – and change our attitude to travel.
Michele Sutton, O.B.E, Principal and Chief Executive of Bradford College welcomed the green initiative and concluded: “I’m really pleased to see that Bradford College is hosting this event and actively encouraging greener travel solutions. It’s good to see not only the College, but also our partners from all over the city taking part – helping to make a positive contribution to the environment and the Bradford community.”
