The search for the ‘Apprentice Electrician of the Year 2010' has begun - and Bradford College, in conjunction with City Training Services is delighted to announce that Nicholas Reid a student studying Electro Technical has won the North West regional heat.

Competition organisers SPARKS have joined forces with Electricfix, in association with NICEIC (the electrical contracting industries independent voluntary body), to encouraging excellence across the electro technical industry through the innovative competition.

Together with his college tutors, Nicholas will attend the final at SPARKS EXPO 2010 at Newbury Racecourse on 21st and 22nd April 2010, where he will compete for the Apprentice Electrician of the Year title.

Bernard Collins of DCET Training has designed the final test and each student that competes will be provided with tools that they will be able to keep. Competing students will also receive national publicity in SPARKS Magazine along with a certificate of achievement for taking part.

All eight finalists will receive a special cut-glass trophy; a stunning 4 piece drill set donated by Milwaukee and brand new Blaklader top quality work wear trousers, along with a number of gifts donated by industry manufacturers. The overall winner of the competition will be awarded the title of ‘SPARKS UK Apprentice Electrician of the Year 2010’ and presented with his/her award by leading trade association NICEIC. In addition, the winner will receive £1,000 worth of Electricfix vouchers and their college will receive £500 worth of Electricfix vouchers.

In support of Nicholas’ venture for excellence, David Ho, Course Tutor said: “Nicholas is a prime example of the progressive learner and future professional electrician who has been educated and mentored through the Electrical Installation programme, within Bradford College. Nicholas possesses the knowledge and temperament to not only attend the final, but to successfully lift the ultimate accolade of Apprentice Electrician of the Year.”

Eight regional heats covering England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland took place during February and March 2010. The final will take place at SPARKS EXPO 2010 at Newbury Racecourse on 21st and 22nd April 2010.

Celia Matthews, Publisher of SPARKS Magazine, concluded: “The competition will cover the tasks that apprentices are doing every day, demonstrating their ability to meet the industry required standards. SPARKS is so excited to be hosting the event and hope that all of the apprentices enjoy the experience.”
