Bradford College’s Occupational Health and Safety Service are celebrating after being highly commended at the prestigious Association of Colleges Health and Safety Champion Awards.

The UK-wide Health and Safety Champion Awards aim to recognise Colleges that are able to demonstrate the benefits of following good health and safety practices.

This is the second consecutive year the Occupational Health and Safety Service at Bradford College has scooped ‘highly commended’ awards for excellence and innovation in health and safety.

Safety Officer Tracy Michael has been leading the way with the development of an innovative new ‘ROAD system’, whilst Occupational Health and Safety Technician Louise Newsham spearheaded the development of the ‘Off Campus Visits system’.  Both systems look set to revolutionise the way ‘Off Campus Visits’ and ‘Road Safety’ are delivered to staff and students at Bradford College.

Speaking on behalf of the Service, Louise Newsham said: “The Occupational Health and Safety Service are delighted that Bradford College was highly commended at the ‘AoC Health and Safety Champion Awards 2011’ for their work in ensuring the College provides a safe working environment for staff and students.”

“The award was the result of all the hard work the Occupational Health and Safety Service put into developing and implementing various College processes including the online driver authorisation system, ROAD.”

Elaborating further Louise Newsham continued: “ROAD is an online system that was rolled out in September 2011, with the simple aim of ensuring all staff who drive on College business are authorised to do so by their managers and comply with all relevant legislation.  For ease of use, ROAD links to other College systems, so relevant information is shared between them. It controls driver and manager details and makes use of in built workflow which triggers automated emails to help simplify the authorisation process.”

Michele Sutton, OBE, Bradford College Principal and Chief Executive said: “We are delighted that Bradford College has been highly commended at the AoC Health and Safety Champion Awards. These awards are a testimony to the Occupational Health and Safety Service in the College that has led to the development of the new systems.  I am very proud of our staff who demonstrated to the assessors that the health and safety of our staff and students is paramount to the College.”
