This year all the publicity material for the Summer Show has been designed by James Thompson, who is just completing the final year of his BA (Hons) Graphic Design, Illustration & Digital Media degree.
James explained, “I wanted to create something based on the College buildings as they are part of our identity. As an art student it is exciting to think that David Hockney, Andy Goldsworthy and so many big names have studied in these buildings too, but I didn’t want to show an old fashioned, sepia presentation of heritage. The Summer Show is a celebration of what we are doing today.
I was inspired by the Baltic in Newcastle to use dynamic angles and show us in a contemporary way. The colours and the noise on the images are a contemporary juxtaposition on heritage.
As well as exterior shots I also included the stained glass at the top of the Lister Building, which you only see as you go up the stairs. When you look closely around Bradford you find lots of fantastic old buildings and lots of great detail just hidden away. Waterstones in the Wool Exchange is a great example of beautiful local architecture given a contemporary treatment that really works.
This was additional to my degree work but I found it very useful for my future career. Liaising about copy a
nd text amends to turn my designs into the poster, invitations and leaflets was really great professional experience as this is exactly the sort of work I hope to do with clients if I go to work for a graphic design agency when I graduate.”
Clare Lamkin, Manager of the Yorkshire Craft Centre and Arts Events Manager for Bradford College, added “I am delighted with the outcome of the Summer Show design brief set to the Graphics, Media and Communication students this year. Several students responded to the brief and it was very difficult deciding which one to choose as they were all exceptional, but we decided to use James’ as he used the College buildings for inspiration.
We have some wonderful buildings on the campus, especially Lister Building, The Old Building and Grove Library, all representing Bradford’s wonderful architecture during the peak of the Textile industry and of course The Old Building and Lister were built for the purpose of teaching textile technology and design to apprentices, meeting the employment needs of the local industry. James’ final design has a contemporary twist but at the same time celebrates the College’s heritage which is very appropriate, as in 2011 Lister Building will celebrate its centenary anniversary.
James has been very professional in his approach, patiently responding to all our suggestions, proof reading and copy amendments. The design will now go to Hallmark Cards in Bingley who once again have agreed to sponsor the Summer Show by printing all the invitations. I should like to thank Hallmark for their continued support.”
