Dance Takes Off!

Evening of Dance - April 09

Dance is really taking off in Spring 2009, with a dance showcase featuring the growing talents of our students and the debut performance of a new professional company, Launch, giving our dancers a springboard for success and development.

Green Monkey proudly presented the College’s third annual Evening of Dance, allowing students to demonstrate the skills and techniques they have developed in the various dance disciplines included in their courses, ranging from contemporary, tap, jazz and urban , as well as physical theatre. Much of the work has been created by the students in the form of original choreography.

Launch, the company formed in January 2009 and presently consists of our former and current Performing Arts students, although it is planned that lecturers will also feature as associate choreographers and performers. It offers the members an opportunity to develop their own choreography and ideas and perform together whilst working on their individual careers or studies. Launch also aims to inspire other young dancers to keep on dancing. The opening show is a contrast of contemporary and hip hop/street dance styles.

Sarah DembickjyLaunch is run by former student, Sarah Dembickjy. She explained, “I completed the BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts and the National Award in Dance here. I now work for Elevations Academy for Dance, teaching 3 to 50 year olds street dance, musical theatre, cheerleading and boys hip hop, and I am doing my IDTA dance teacher training. My studies at Bradford College made me realise what I wanted to do. Everyone did so much for me I wanted to give something back and help students as much as I can. I have always kept a foot in the door at College as I would love to teach here eventually when I have more experience under my belt. Another former student involved is Lisa Edwards, who did the course a couple of years before me and who is about to complete a degree in directing. The other members are Stephanie George, Emma Zabrocky, Lauren Ansell, Elizabeth Hall, Paulina Jozwiak, Tayma Lavelle, Kasia Magon and Alicia Norfolk.”

Along with paper Zoo Theatre Company, which comprises tutors, former students and current students, and Green Monkey Productions, run by our current students, Launch now forms the third-student led professional company to have its roots in the College. Offering real vocational experience and an outlet for creative talent in Bradford, they show that three really is the magic number!
