Our annual e-card competition presented students from the National Diploma in Art & Design (Interactive Media) with a very different challenge and increased exposure due to the College’s involvement as main sponsor of the Bradford Animation Festival at the National Media Museum.
This year, as well as being sent out by Bradford College to contacts throughout the globe and being seen on the Big Screen in Bradford’s Centenary Square, the 3 winners featured on the biggest screen possible, the IMAX.
Course Tutor, Dale Cochrane, set a stimulating brief to create a card which would spread our Healthy College message around the world, using one of 3 themes: healthy eating; dealing with stress and promoting physical activity/sport. In previous years our students had used Macromedia Flash to produce our e-card but this year, following their studies of pioneering animators including Brothers Quay, Aardman, Tim Burton, Michel Gondry, Gumby and Trapdoor; they tackled claymation and stop motion animation.
Producing this work to a very tight timescale demanded great time mananagement as well as research, invention and technical skill. Dale noted that the time element had rendered this very difficult as they only had 4 weeks from receiving the initial brief to delivering their finished cards. The judging panel, comprising Healthy College Manager, Jane Marshall; College Events Manager, Clare Lamkin and Chair of the College Corporation, Kevin McGuiness, also faced a tricky task to select first, second and third prize winners from some very impressive entries.
After considerable debate and repeated viewings of the final ten, the judges still found it impossible to decide a winner between Thomas and Melissa, so the first prize was awarded to both students equally, although in terms of the e-card it was agreed that Thomas’ was best for corporate purposes.
Our two winning cards were included in the showreel to be played on our stand and on the IMAX at BAF’08, so they were seen by students and professional animators and film enthusiasts from around the world.
