National Diploma students worked on their own ‘Toy Story’ for their final major project.
Course Tutor, Dale Cochrane explained, “Toy art is becoming increasingly recognised as a concept within contemporary art and design. The idea of using toys in art or as an art object has been brought to the forefront by artists such as Jeff Koons, Nina Braun, Annette Messager, Jon Burgerman, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Sherrie Levine, David Mach and Boris Hopek among others.”
The students each had to create a saleable toy/s using the materials and scale of their choice; produce flyers and posters to market their product, and make a video or animation using their toy(s).

Dale continued, “Another project, In Loving Memory, concerned a discussion of the development of art and design over time. The students were given a starting point of a 20, 000 year old sculpture, the Venus of Willendorf, and allowed to choose any art movement from then up until the present time. Most chose surrealism, dada and pop art. They had to make their work entertaining, informative and accessible to people who did not understand art, as well as being a teaching tool for first year students in contextual studies.”
