Level 3 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery

Course Overview

This course develops the skills learnt on the Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery.

You will choose between Bench Joinery and Site Carpentry depending on your Level 2 Diploma.

Course Structure

You will study the following units:


Knowledge of Information, Quantities and Communicating With Others (3)
Knowledge of Building Methods and Construction Technology (3)

Bench Joinery:
Know How to and Set Up and Use Fixed and Transportable Machinery
Know How to and Manufacture Complex Shaped Joinery Products
Know How to and Produce Complex Shaped Joinery Product Details
A synoptic practical assignment.

Site Carpentry:

Know How to and Erect Complex Structural Carcassing Components
Know How to and Maintain Non-structural and Structural Components
Know How to and Set up and Use Fixed and Transportable Machinery
A synoptic practical assignment.

Entry Requirements

You should have attended and completed the Level 2 Diploma qualification. You must have achieved a minimum of 85% attendance and punctuality  and complied with the College's regulations for student behaviour.
If you have not studied the Level 2 Diploma qualification you will be required to attend an interview and be assessed for your suitability for a Level 3 course.
You must undertake an assessment for Literacy and Numeracy and achieve a minimum of Level 2 in both subjects.

How Will I Learn?

You will train in the workshop towards completing the practical assessment. This will include for site carpentry erecting a roof with hips and a dormer and for bench joinery making winding stairs and a bow window.

You will also study the job knowledge relating to all the units listed.

Expect Also To

You will  attend Functional Skills sessions in Mathematics as part of your studies.

You will also have individual tutorials with your personal tutor. These sessions are mandatory and must be attended and completed to progress on the course.

How You Will Be Assessed

Unit multi choice end tests, GOLA end of year multi choice exam and a practical assessment

Things You May Need

  • You will need safety footwear with steel toe caps and these must be worn in the workshops.
  • You will need stationery equipment such as a pen, pencil, etc.
