Bradford College are to invest in the latest state of the art ‘Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), with plans in the pipeline for key employers to use the equipment in a lucrative sponsorship deal that will benefit all parties.
The (SEM) has helped to advance new areas of study in the medical and physical science communities, since its development in the early 1950s. The SEM uses electrons rather than light to create images, allowing researchers to examine a larger variety of specimen. Other advantages over traditional microscopes include: a large depth of field to allow more of a specimen to be in focus at one time, and higher resolution to allow closely spaced specimens to be magnified at much higher levels.
These advantages, coupled with the strikingly clarity of the images, make the (SEM) one of the most useful instruments in research today.
