The Wedding/Ezkontza /La Boda

Untitled work by Mandy Broadley
The Wedding / Ezkontza / La Boda is an exciting fusion of disciplines and cultures exploring the theme of marriage and its meanings with twin exhibitions held at the Yorkshire Craft Centre in Bradford and Bilbao-Arte in Spain.  At the simultaneous openings held on the evening of 5th May, participants took turns to see and celebrate with each other via Skype.

Lecturer Manya Donaque at the Bradford openingThis international collaboration is the latest outcome of our longstanding and valuable relationship with Universidad del Pais Vasco in Bilbao, as part of the Erasmus Staff Mobility Teaching exchange programme between European institutions. Manya Donaque from Bradford and Inmaculada Jimenez from Spain made visits and worked with students and staff to develop the project, resulting in a seminar and a series of exhibitions.

Manya  explained, “Inmaculada Jimenez came over to Bradford and we did a seminar outlining the concept. Everyone discussed their ideas and said what their idea of marriage was. Inmaculada then gave the same brief to her students. My students are from print and Inmaculada’s are from drawing so this was a marriage of two artistic worlds and also a marriage of cultures and languages. I took work from Bradford to Spain and as the Bradford students couldn’t be there their photographs represented them. Many had dressed up to be brides or grooms. Work was then split into two tables for Bradford and Bilbao and each student had to choose who to ‘marry’ by having their work displayed alongside another’s. Some couldn’t make up their minds to marry just one person, so we had a threesome and a few little divorces. We then had a little engagement ceremony where we all walked together through the space.”
