Create a vision

Photography Exhibition in aid of Sightsavers International

Create a Vision

In February 2008 our first year HND Photography students staged their first exhibition, Create a Vision.  As well as being a fantastic showcase of their photography skills, it has given them useful experience of professional practice and raises money for a very worthwhile charity, Sightsavers International. They chose the title to summarise the dual purpose of sharing their individual creative visions and saving the vision of others.

At the exhibition opening Course Tutor Andy Vaines told guests, “This is the sixth year we have run this event and without doubt this is one of the strongest shows so far.  Our students are already working towards careers and this has given them industry level practice. They have gone out into the region and found generous sponsorship for the costs of the exhibition including printing and frames and getting some fantastic raffle prizes.  It costs only £17 to save a child from blindness and at only £20 per print or £40 framed, their work is a steal. I am as proud as Punch of them.”

Lecturer Andy Vaines and Les Hardy of Sightsavers InternationalLes Hardy of Sightsavers International praised the students' “really exciting interpretations” and their success in meeting the brief which “required them to focus on being professionals.” Les explained that as a volunteer fundraiser he knew only too well that results always involved many rejections, so their successes were impressive. He then spoke movingly about the inspirational work of Sightsavers and expressed the gratitude of all the people who had already been helped thanks to the charity’s valued relationship with the College.

The continuing commitment of our Photography staff and students has done much to spread the word about Sightsavers. Read on to discover how Margaret McMillan Primary School became involved.  Continued
