Our annual design competition seeks to promote and encourage creative talent in years 9 and 10 at local schools. This year we set competition briefs around HM The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and invited winners to a special prize giving lunch in the Yorkshire Craft Centre on 13th June.
Before presenting the prizes and speaking with each winner individually about tehir work, Bradford College Principal and Chief Executive, Michele Sutton OBE, welcomed prize winners, parents and teachers. She expressed pleasure in the magnificent display produced by winners this year and that it was able to be shown in the gallery where preparations would begin the following day to stage the annual Summer Show, a spectacular event which filled the Lister Building and Yorkshire Craft Centre with the final work of students from Bradford School of Arts & Media. She suggested that many of the winners might follow in their footsteps and told the school students, “I wasn’t on the judging panel but I saw the competition entries being opened and I was really pleased at the high level of work, the sophistication of the drawing and some of the techniques used. The judging panel was made up of our specialist teachers in Arts and Media, who are all practitioners themselves; artists and designers. We would welcome any of you who wanted to develop your creative skills on our further and higher education programmes. There is a lot of talent in the room and our tutors here can talk to you about your aspirations over lunch.” Michele noted that while the panel did not award each prize in every category, the high standard of drawing was reflected in an exceptional number of Highly Commended certificates being awarded.
Michele thought that the gown designed for HM The Queen by Raphael Imhans was “brilliant” and suggested that seeing his drawing realised, the Duchess of Cambridge might love to wear it too. Awarding his prize, Michele predicted, “We will be seeing you at London Fashion Week shortly.” Afterwards Raphael disclosed that he particularly admires Gok Wan and hopes that this is the first step to emulating his success. He said, “I couldn’t believe I had won at first. I want to be a dress designer and make things that are easy going but stand out from the crowd.” His mother was very proud and noting his interest in rap music, wondered if he might design clothes for music artists and bands. She was thrilled that he had such encouragement and thought the finished dress was beautiful.
