"One of the aims of the AA2A programme is to encourage participants to experiment and explore unfamiliar art forms and to offer time to investigate new directions.
This piece, Laboratory, is a compilation of small experiments in 3D working mostly with metals. I have begun to learn how to forge hot metal, using mostly bronze or mild steel. I am working with 3mm rolled steel and using a spot welder to manipulate steel welding wire as well as getting to grips with the print department laser cutter, using acrylics as well as paper.
For the first six months of my AA2A year, I was engaged in initiating and making work for a large Arts Council funded exhibition project, Landscape. The third exhibition in the series was presented in the Bradford Craft Gallery in May this year. As a continuation of that work these new pieces are all loosely connected with landscape as a theme, but also have a wider resonance with more abstract ideas to do with balance, tension and motion.
Being a part of the Art School’s creative environment has offered the stimulus to develop new directions in my work and is greatly appreciated."
