Our ‘Old Building’ was officially opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales on 23rd June 1882 and to prepare for a fabulous 125th birthday party on the anniversary, the main hall has been renovated and returned to its former glory. Over the years as Victorian splendour fell out of fashion it became rather drab and faded. College Estates Manager, Peter Steward, has overseen the refurbishment.

“The hall had been used as a lecture theatre for many years but we have been working hard to return it to its original purpose as a meeting hall. We have done a number of remedial repairs, improved electrical services and repaired damaged glazing. We removed the screen and seating bank and blinds, as well as undertaking a thorough programme of cleaning and redecoration. Clare Lamkin identified the new colour scheme in conjunction with English Heritage and this, plus removing plaster concealing the top window panels, has considerably lightened the hall so that you can appreciate all the period features.

It is a lovely facility with an original raked stage, which is such a rarity. I last remember it being used during the Miners’ Strike in 1984 when Arthur Scargill hired the hall and made a rabble rousing speech!”

The hall is now a fantastic venue for College events and is now ready to celebrate its birthday in style.
