As the man who puts people as the heart of corporate purpose - how does Ian McAleese intend to make a difference at Bradford College? Ian reveals more…

“As the Head of Human Resources at Pace Plc I believe it’s vital to maintain links with education and invest time in students as potential employees of the future. It’s about the passion to make a difference and working through what needs to change and what we can do to add value.”

“I’m a Board Member on the Bradford Regional Employment and Skills Board and was until recently the Chair of Governors at Woodlands Primary School in Leeds.  I felt the time was right to make the transition from the school sector to FE/HE and become a member of Bradford College Corporation.”

Elaborating further Ian said: “I suppose its been a natural evolution from the school sector to FE/HE.  Woodlands Primary School has given me a greater understanding of the education system and what kids expect at primary school, filtering through to further education.”

As a Board Member on the Bradford Regional Employment and Skills Board, Ian is keen to ensure the skills base in Bradford matches the needs of the individual, employers and the economy.  Ian explained: “From a business point of view, we at Pace recruit many of our people from outside of the region. However, long term it would be good to develop people from within the region, working with Bradford College and the university to give businesses like Pace the calibre of students we require.”

Ian continued: “From Pace’s perspective, we want to see a route where you take a school, for example like Titus Salt School and complete a diploma in ICT, then progress through to A level.  At this point, the learner may decide to do an apprenticeship (and that might be with us) or come to the college and do a foundation diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering that is linked to our business. As graduates, they can then come back to Pace.  Again that is a long term objective.  From a business point of view, it fits with the Employment and Skills Board objectives on how to organically grow employment within the region.”

“What motivated me to join the Corporation at Bradford College? Ian reflected: “As a business we take our corporate and social responsibility very seriously - it’s at the forefront of what we do and it’s also something I’ve been passionate about throughout my career.” As a highly regarded HR professional with a capacity to innovate, Ian looks set to work in harmony with the college to create challenging jobs, fulfilling careers and relationships within the city and beyond.
