Nabeel Hussain - Students' Union President

Nabeel Hussain is the newly appointed President of the Students’ Union, elected by the students of Bradford College to support the interests and welfare of the student body.

Graduating from Bradford College in 2009 armed with a foundation degree in Public Services Management, Nabeel Hussain has always taken a keen interest in student welfare and community involvement.

In a frank and revealing interview Nabeel explains where he has come from and what he wants to achieve…

“I’m highly ambitious…. There is so much I want to accomplish, but I’ll never walk over anyone else to achieve my goals.” At the age of 26, Nabeel has already set up his own company, worked as a mediator for Community Accord, volunteered for a variety of charity initiatives and is quadrilingual.

“I’m passionate about the community I’m involved in. I do a lot of charity work as I want to make a difference – and also to the students at Bradford College.
I want to be the megaphone for the student voice.  Working collectively with mid and higher management to ensure the student voice is heard and is taken onboard during the decision making process.  I want to ensure students get value for money and that every learner does matter – not just ‘every learner matters.’ My door is always open, I want students to come and see me, I want to hear what they’ve got to say!”

Nabeel Hussain has always taken an interest in issues that affect the community. In 2008 Nabeel volunteered to work for the Witness Service at Bradford Crown Court to provide support for victims and witnesses on both an emotional and practical level. Nabeel explained: “I voluntarily work one day a week as a Witness Service Assistant, helping victims and witnesses in court.”

Elaborating further Nabeel said: “My work involves supporting children who have been victims of crime or have witnessed a crime; it’s my job to make sure that the child gets the best support at court, as it can be a daunting experience.”

Talking about his long term future plans, Nabeel said: “My ultimate goal is to work for a non profit making organisation, preferably a charity, which deals with people hands on.  I own my own business, but nothing is more rewarding than knowing you’ve made a difference to someone else’s life.  In business you invest money for a capital return. In a nutshell you’re counting money and counting your profits. I did one day of volunteering and found that more rewarding than running my own business.  You can’t compare the two.”

“I have a high level of integrity and always have others best interests at heart.  I am who I am today because of the support and love of my immediate family and friends.  Without them I wouldn’t have achieved any of my life's goals and ambitions.”

Nabeel continued:” Because of my experience working as a volunteer, I’ve grown as a person and am able to deal with difficult situations in a sensitive manner to ensure a positive outcome.  l feel I’m able to draw on this experience and apply it to my role of Students’ Union President.  I want the students at Bradford College to know that I’m here to support, listen and advise them on any student issues that may arise.”

Nabeel continued: “I’m encouraged by student feedback, which has been very positive; students are reporting that they’ve got someone they can come and speak to and that their voice is heard.”

Nabeel reflected: “During my foundation degree in 2008 I shadowed Principal, Michele Sutton for one of my coursework modules. I said to Michele: ‘A good sign of a great leader, is how many leaders that leader creates.  As the leader of Bradford College - the decisions that you have made, have nurtured the students to become the leaders of tomorrow.”

Nabeel concluded: “Today when I see Michele in boardroom meetings, she says to me: ‘You spoke to me of great leaders – I’m the Principal and you’re the President, so you in yourself, are a leader’.  I was inspired by Michele Sutton’s comments. I intend to do everything I can to support the students - to help shape them into the leaders of the future.”
