*Non-EU students on a Tier 4 General Student Visa can only study part-time as a second course in addition to a full-time main course.

The Part-Time EFL course will not be accepted as a full-time course of study for the purpose of visa applications.

  • When you arrive, we will test your English and you will then join a group working at your level.
  • You will study with experienced and well-qualified teachers. In recent years we have had students from over 20 countries in the English Language Centre.
  • Maximum group size for all courses is 18, although the average size is usually lower.
  • Each student on a full-time course has a personal tutor. The tutor will meet you regularly throughout your course and help you to plan your programme and your studies depending on your level and your plans after the course has finished.
  • We encourage you to work towards a range of different English Language examinations, including IELTS and Cambridge examinations.
  • Tuition fees do not include the charge for examination entry. Each term, students are expected to buy a course book (this is not included in the tuition fee).
  • You can start on any Monday throughout the year (minimum of 2 weeks for the General English Summer School), but we recommend that you start at the beginning of a new term. To get the maximum benefit, we advise you to come for three terms (one academic year), but you can come for one or two terms or even just a few weeks (depending on the course). If you would like to change the number of hours you want to study, you will be able to complete an amendment form and submit it at the end of each term.  You won’t be able to do this during a term.
  • Students should be aged 17 years or over for all courses in the English Language Centre.
  • Students on a Tier 4 General Student Visa can undertake a course at Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Level B1 or above.  International students intending to study for 6 months or less may only be able to apply for a Student Visitor visa.  International students without the required level of English for Tier 4 may also apply for the Extended Student Visitor Visa for up to 11 months.  Students intending to study for longer than 6 months should apply for a Student General Tier 4 visa. Please visit the UK Border Agency website for further information about visas: www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk
  • Students from the European Union have more flexibility with regards to the time spent studying – please email us for further information.
