General English

ELC studentsStudents join the General English course because it is very flexible and suitable for students of all abilities, from beginners to advanced level. You can study for a full academic year or just a few weeks.

You will follow an 8-hour core (compulsory) General English programme with a choice of additional Special Study modules (9 or 12 hours depending on the course chosen.  EU students can also choose a 6-hour option). The choices on offer may include:

  • Business English
  • English for Tourism
  • British Studies
  • Current Topics
  • Speaking and Pronunciation
  • Writing
  • Reading & Listening
  • Cambridge Exam Preparation
  • Introduction to IELTS

The objective of this course is to provide and build upon a solid lexical and grammatical foundation, from which you will improve and develop your English language skills. On completion, you will be better prepared for future study and work using an English medium. We encourage you to work towards recognised English Language examinations. Examinations are optional for EU students and international students on a Student Visitor Visa or Dependant Visa. Students on Tier 4 General Student Visas must sit an examination to complete their course.

If you are an international student, you can study General English for:

  • Either:

             - 20 hours per week;

             - or 17 hours per week.

  • You can also use the Self-Access Centre for extra independent study.
  • Individual timetables will be given to students, based on the course options chosen.

If you are an EU student, you can study General English for:

  • Either:

             - 20 hours per week;

             - 17 hours per week;

             - or 14 hours per week.

  • You can also use the Self-Access Centre for extra  independent study.
  • Individual timetables will be given to students, based on the course options chosen.
